Congratulations to Matthew Frost who will play his 150th game this weekend!
Matthew “Hew” Frost
Congratulations mate on 150 games. Who would have thought when we first came down as youngsters in 2015 and senior blokes thought we were the same person that you’d still be running around ten years later.
Hew came to MOCFC as a slow-footed ruck/forward with poor skills. Today he is a slow-footed ruck/forward with slightly improved skills.
Some of Hew’s highlights have been:
- The time he saw Nick Watty receive a small push and decided to run the entire length of the field to shove an opposition player into the fence only for everyone, including Nick Watty, to wonder why he did that, and subsequently receive a yellow card.
- Never letting shame stop him from sharing if he felt he was best-on that day.
- Half of the words in speeches being “obviously”.
- The mystery of his jersey ‘shrinking’ every year.
- The famous ‘touch and feel’ photo capturing his break-neck close down speed.
- Tossing the coin only to forget which direction he picked.
More recently Hew has talked about reducing his workload at the club and even thoughts of retirement. It’s safe to say this won’t be happening. I’ve never seen a man under 30 more excited for over 35’s footy. Hew is really counting on getting better with age (dubious).
Jokes aside, Hew has had about 5 careers all worthy of legend status.
- As an administrator he’s done just about everything to make sure all teams get to play each week including handing out jerseys, signing the sheet, and getting players registered the night before.
- As a helper he’s got to training early and stayed back late to set up lights, fill up drink bottles, put away footy’s and lock up.
- As a coach he’s developed new players, welcomed returning old boys, and steered his teams towards success.
- As a leader he’s taken on the role as Vice President spending countless hours behind the scenes keeping the club humming.
- As a player he’s put his hand up every week, laid his body on the line, and had dominant performances.
For all of this Hew was deservingly given the Presidents Award in 2019 and 2021 for outstanding service to the club.
Matthew, you epitomise what footy’s about, having fun with your mates, and building community. You’ve done an immeasurable amount of work for the club off the field. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to run out with you this weekend.
Go well mate.
