Milestone Games – Saturday 27 April 2024

Congratulations to Alex Strempel who will play his 50th game this weekend in the Seniors!

Congratulations to Alex ‘Stremp’ Strempel on notching up the 50 game milestone.

Arriving at the club in 2017, Stremp instantly became an integral part of under 19s team playing at Centre Half Forward. I think anyone who played in that team will attest to the fact that we won a number of close games that year because we were able to kick long to Stremp and let him take a massive contested mark. Often having to deal with being double or triple teamed, he was always able to stand up and clunk a big mark exactly when the team needed him. A feat made even more impressive when due to his poor eyesight there were times where Stremp would ask me which one of our teammates had the ball up field before he’d call for the footy.

In his second year of Under 19s Stremp named was co-captain of the team. He also showed his versatility by swinging down back to lock down the defence when the team needed another tall defender.

In a true act of courage Stremp played through a back injury in 2018 that would require surgery at the end of the season and potentially spelled the end of his playing days, but thankfully there was more to come.

Stremp made his return to footy last year and it was like he hadn’t missed a beat. After a best on ground performance for the Reserves in round 1 he made his senior debut in round 2 and has continued to be a mainstay in the team since then.

It was great to have Stremp back around the club. As you will all know not only is Stremp a fantastic player on the field but he is also exactly the kind of person you want at your club off field. Stremp has time for everyone at the club no matter what team they play in and is invested in everyone enjoying their time at the club.

One thing that might surprise people is how much of a VAFA nerd Stremp is. Whether it is him casually slipping into conversation which team had a good win in Division 3 this week or messaging me on a Wednesday night in February to inform me the number of Mazenod players who have got a clearance to leave the club, Stremp is all over it.

Congratulations mate I couldn’t be prouder of the effort you put in to get back to play and hope there is still many more games to come! The club is most definitely a better place with you around and anyone who saw the smile on your face last week celebrating your first win in the Seniors will know how much you love the club! Hope the boys can make it two in a row for you.
